History and Culture
The Premonstratensian abbey in Villers-Cotterêts, founded in 1671, was established through the relocation of a community from Clairfontaine.
A tabernacle was identified in the Sainte-Ursule church in Clairfontaine whose craftsmanship and decoration correspond to those of the piece described in Autreppes. One of Clairfontaine’s two calvaries is considered noteworthy because its pedestal apparently comes directly from the 12th-century abbey.
The historic site of Abbaye de Montreuil les Dames is located in the immediate vicinity of Clairfontaine. The Abbaye de Foigny monastery is located nearby. Further afield in the region are the historic site of Martin-Rieux and the ruins of Abbaye de Bonnefontaine.
