Montreuil-l'Argillé combines the motte castrale, churches and the Guiel Valley. The motte castrale forms a semicircular structure overlooking the Guiel Valley to the west.
Culture
The feudal motte was built in the 11th century by Giroie, Lord of Montreuil, to defend the town. The motte castrale still features ditches, embankments and some surviving masonry remains.
The Château de Lusigneul is privately owned. Its main construction phases date from the 17th and 18th centuries. The château is partly protected as a historic monument; its dovecote and two corner pavilions were listed as historic monuments on 23 May 1984.
At the edge of the road to Saint-Aquilin-d'Augerons (CD35) stands the Menhir de Montreuil-l'Argillé. It dates from around 5,000 BC. The Maison du Bailliage was built between the late 15th and early 16th centuries and is decorated with sculptures depicting Saint Catherine, Saint Barbara and God the Father.
The Église de Montreuil has a 15th-century sandstone bell tower. The Église Saint-Aquilin d'Augerons retains Romanesque elements and a bell cast in 1770 and named Louis Eustache.
Those who choose Montreuil-l'Argillé as their base wish to rent a holiday apartment.
Nature
Montreuil-l'Argillé is part of the registered protected area of the Charentonne and Guiel valleys. The La vallée du Guiel hiking trail includes a grassy path along the Guiel Valley as well as a section through the forest.
Hiking
The La vallée du Guiel circular trail offers a 5 km variant that passes the Église de Saint-Denis-d’Augerons. The Circuit de la Vallée du Guiel runs along the Guiel and leads to the Église Saint-Aquilin d'Augerons. A picnic area is located near the circular trail at the washhouse of Saint-Denis-d'Augerons.
