Gisay-La-Coudre: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

During excavations in Gisay-la-Coudre, 76 Merovingian burials were uncovered in 1975, lying above Gallo-Roman remains. A hoard of 635 bronze coins from the 3rd century was also discovered. The excavations also revealed three rooms with thermal facilities belonging to a comparatively elaborately designed villa.

Culture and History

The Church of Saint-Ouen-de-Mancelles was listed as a historic monument in 1962. Its original chapel, which now forms the choir, was built as early as the 11th century. A genuine rood screen with two altars stands in front of the sanctuary; there is also an unusual statue regarded as a masterpiece of folk art.

The Cloître de Gisay is a small enclosure dating from the 16th century that surrounds centuries-old hazel bushes. Local traditions associate the site with pilgrimages and healings attributed to the effects of hazel.

Events

The Gisay-la-Coudre donkey race takes place every year on 15 August. The weekend around the donkey race includes a flea market, a fair, a meal and fireworks.

Regular concerts by the orchestra of the Rouen Opera or by choirs from the surrounding area take place in the Church of Saint-Taurin or Saint-Aubin. An annual fishing competition is held at the pond near the entrance to the village on 1 May.
