Gauciel: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Gauciel combines rural cultural heritage and open landscapes with the presence of Air Base 105.

Anyone wishing to rent a holiday apartment in Gauciel can include the landmarks Manoir de Gauciel, Saint-Pierre Church and Air Base 105 in their personal travel plans.

Culture

A dovecote has survived from the medieval Manoir de Gauciel. The present-day square enclosure was probably built in the 13th century and comprised agricultural buildings, including the barn and the gateway. The barn was altered in the 15th century.

The enclosure with its walls, as well as the barn and dovecote of the Manoir de Gauciel, were listed as historic monuments by decree of 11 April 2008. The grounds of plots B1 and B2 at the cadastral parcel “Le Clos du Manoir”, including the pond area, were also included.

Saint-Pierre Church is built mainly of flint and dates from the 17th and 18th centuries. A half-timbered porch stands in front of the entrance, while the portal is crowned by a sculpted keystone. At that time, Gauciel was a barony dependent on an abbey.

Nature and Trails

Gauciel lies within the type 2 ZNIEFF “La vallée de l'Eure d'Acquigny à Menilles, la basse vallée de l'Iton”. The GR® 26 long-distance hiking trail is signposted in Gauciel.

Local Flavours

Le Clos de Cerisey produces artisanal Rosé cider and homemade by-products, which are sold in the estate’s boutique. In Gauciel, fruit growers Stéphane Van Tornhout and Martine imported an apple variety with red skin and red flesh from Canada. At Le Clos de Cerisey, the red apple is processed into juice and a Norman aperitif.

Culture and the Present Day

Air Base 105 extends across 49 cadastral plots in the municipalities of Fauville, Gauciel and Huest. Groups can take a guided tour of Évreux Air Base 105, including a visit to the base museum, a presentation of its history and a viewing of a ground-based aircraft in the presence of a pilot.
