Culture and History

The Church of Saint-Sébastien has a Romanesque portal and a Romanesque nave wall dating from the 11th and 12th centuries. The nave was rebuilt in the 16th century. Notre-Dame Abbey in Corneville was founded in 1143 by Gislebert, also known as Gilbert, de Corneville.

The grounds of the former Notre-Dame Abbey contain underground remains as well as the preserved south and east wings of the cloister. The former abbey is privately owned, visible from the entrance to the church, and cannot be visited.

A stone sarcophagus in the parish church wall is associated, according to a local legend, with the remains of the “Dame de Corneville”. The town’s cultural heritage also includes the Corneville carillon, which was classified as a Monument historique in 2003. It can be visited upon request.

Nature

Les Prés de l’Abbaye is designated as an Espace Naturel Sensible des Départements Eure. The area is a wet meadow bordered by an arm of the Risle and criss-crossed by hedgerows typical of the bocage landscape.

The “Chemin de l’Abbaye” circular trail runs along the slopes of the Risle between bocage and woodland and offers views over the green valley.
