In the GOLD BEACH area, the British landings are presented in this section – from the exploration of the beaches to the landing on 6 June 1944. Dioramas, information panels, objects and personal documents donated by D-Day veterans illustrate this history.
History
The British Normandy Memorial is open all year round and can be visited free of charge. It records the names of more than 22,000 men and women under British command who died on D-Day and during the Battle of Normandy.
The Église Saint-Martin also bears traces of various periods: it dates from the late 11th century and was remodelled particularly in the 19th century. Its detached bell tower was built in the late 12th century and has five storeys. After being damaged on 6 June 1944, the church was partially rebuilt with American assistance in memory of Byrd’s ditching.
The AMERICA area in the America & Gold Beach Museum documents the first official airmail connection between the United States and France in 1927.
The remains of the Mont Fleurie gun battery are located in a private field directly next to the British Normandy Memorial. They can be reached via local roads and footpaths; please follow the local signs and designated routes.
Coast and Footpaths
The beach at Ver-sur-Mer stretches for 3,500 metres from La Provence to the Hâble de Heurtot.
The Chemin de Mémoire forms a walking route with information panels about the history of Ver-sur-Mer, leading from the British Memorial to Place Churchill. Another coastal path runs from the blockhouse, which serves as the C.N.V.’s base, along the properties on the seafront to Paisty Vert.
The marshland can be reached from the town centre on foot or by bicycle via Allée Jean-Pierre Dupont and Chemin du Pont et Chaussée; cars are not permitted there.
Sailing
The sailing school of the Cercle Nautique de Ver-sur-Mer is certified as an “École Française de Voile”. The Cercle Nautique de Ver-sur-Mer offers numerous courses supervised by qualified instructors, as well as competitions, training, recreational sailing and various nautical activities.
