Culture and history

The Bayeux Tapestry is 68.80 metres long, 50 centimetres high and weighs almost 350 kilograms. As a unique, embroidered historical document, it records medieval life, including the 11th century, and has been included in UNESCO’s “Memory of the World” programme.

The Abbaye aux Hommes in Caen was founded around 1060 by William the Conqueror and Matilda; William is buried there. In Falaise stands Château Guillaume Le Conquérant, a listed historic monument from the 12th century on a rocky promontory between the valleys of the Ante and the Marescot.

Landscape and trails

The Côte de Nacre stretches for 25 kilometres along the English Channel between Ouistreham and Courseulles-sur-Mer. In the wider regional surroundings of Calvados, Plage de Riva Bella, Plage de Cabourg and Sword Beach are listed as beaches.

Suisse Normande is characterised by ridges, valleys, slate cliffs, picturesque villages and the meanders of the River Orne. Getting around

NOMAD bus route 121 connects Bayeux and Courseulles-sur-Mer and serves Arromanches-les-Bains as well as other coastal communities. In Bayeux, this route connects with NOMAD Train at Bayeux railway station.

The club in Franceville organises guided outings by kayak and Hawaiian canoe under the names “Balade de l’Estuaire” and “Découverte du Plancton”.

Food and drink

The Route du cidre in the Pays d'Auge leads to around twenty producers bearing the Cru de Cambremer designation. The culinary traditions of the Pays d'Auge include Calvados, Pommeau and the AOP cheeses Camembert, Livarot and Pont-l’Évêque; some dairies and cheese producers are open to visitors.
