Culture and History

The Church of Saint-Germain in Varaville dates back to a foundation in the early Middle Ages, probably before the year 1000. It has a Gothic choir from the 13th century, a central tower probably dating from the 15th century, a wooden Christ from the 13th century, a 17th-century baptismal font decorated with bosses, and a Madonna and Child from the 14th century.

The architecturally designed house and gardens of the Haras de Varaville are listed as historic monuments. The Cour de la Maison manor house dates from the 16th century and is listed as a historic monument. It was built in 1489 by Robert Hugues Anzeray de la Hogue on land acquired in Le Hôme and Suhomme.

The private Saint-Joseph Chapel combines brick and limestone in its architecture and was added at the roadside in 1883.

The former half-timbered Decauville station in Varaville commemorates the railway connection between Caen and Trouville-sur-Mer, which operated from 1892 to 1932. The Decauville tramway began operating in 1892, passed through Le Hôme and stopped in front of the racecourse.
