Culture and history

Sommervieu church has preserved its almost completely intact chancel dating from the late 13th century. It is illuminated by very elongated lancet windows.

The church contains 19 stained-glass windows, including six restored windows and seven windows created in 2005 and 2006. It also houses a Stations of the Cross based on the Bayeux Tapestry, made by fifteen embroiderers from the municipality.

The B-8 forward airfield was built between 14 and 22 June 1944 on the border between Sommervieu, Saint-Vigor-le-Grand and Magny-en-Bessin. It remained in operation until August 1945 and was 1,200 metres long.

The history of the former seminary grounds dates back to 1371, when a fortress in Sommervieu was first mentioned. Between 1729 and 1753, the moats and two ponds of the former seminary were created there. The former Château-Séminaire complex comprises a chapel, a crypt, a park and moats.

Several historic buildings add to the character of the village: the Ferme du château bears traces dating from the 16th century on its cider press. The main building of the Manoir de Chédeville dates from the first half of the 17th century, while its façade dates from the mid-18th century.

The Château de la Réserve was built approximately in the second third of the 18th century in a style typical of the Bessin region.

The park of the Château de la Réserve is laid out in the English style and contains a lime-tree hedge, a giant sequoia and two copper beech trees.

Sommervieu’s municipal park has play equipment for children. Weekly activities such as yoga take place in Sommervieu’s village hall.
