History and Culture
The Church of Saint-Ortaire is located at the bottom of a valley, dates from the 13th century, and is a very pure example of 13th-century Gothic architecture. It houses a 15th-century baptismal font classified as an object under the Monuments historiques. A double washhouse is located near the Church of Saint-Ortaire.
At the former mayor's office, a memorial commemorates 12 English and Canadian paratroopers who died in Saint-Vaast on the night of 6 June 1944. On 6 June 1944, a Horsa glider crashed in Saint-Vaast-en-Auge; both pilots were killed.
Signalman Douglas Davis is buried in the churchyard of Saint-Vaast-en-Auge. There are 12 Commonwealth war graves from the 1939–1945 war, as well as original grave markers for soldiers buried there who were killed on D-Day. The Commonwealth war graves are located in the lower-right corner of the churchyard. The churchyard of Saint-Vaast-en-Auge is next to a level crossing in the village.
