History
A memorial at the Abbey of Ardenne commemorates, at the site of the event, the execution of Canadian soldiers during the fighting in June 1944. The abbey is also part of the Canadian Remembrance Route, which commemorates the 500,000 Canadian soldiers who fought twice in the 20th century to bring freedom to the French people.
Culture
Free guided tours of the Abbey of Ardenne provide access to the interior of the abbey church. The gardens can be visited freely and free of charge during the abbey’s opening hours. Historical tours of the abbey are offered on Wednesdays and Thursdays at 2:30 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. during the Easter and summer holidays.
The Institut Mémoires de l’édition contemporaine (IMEC) offers a free year-round cultural programme with conferences, exhibitions, events and tours. At La Canadienne, the route passes through Authie and Saint-Contest and honours the Canadian liberators. The annual La Canadienne road race starts in Saint-Germain-la-Blanche-Herbe.
Routes
A pedestrian access route and a shared pedestrian and cycle path were created or renovated in Parc Serge Maillard, near the Abbey of Ardenne. Bus routes 20 towards Rots–Bonny and 21 towards Saint-Germain both serve the Ardenne stop.
