History and Remembrance
The cemetery honors American soldiers and civilians who lost their lives during the Battle of Normandy in the Second World War. WN 62 was one of the 15 resistance nests at Omaha Beach and, on June 6, 1944, the strongest of these 15 positions.
At the cemetery's Visitor Center, Operation Overlord is explained in detail through an exhibition and films. The Overlord Museum is located at the access roundabout to the American cemetery near Omaha Beach. It brings together a collection of more than 10,000 objects, including more than 40 vehicles, tanks, and artillery pieces, and presents the major stages of the Normandy landings in a life-size exhibition. The Notre-Dame de l’Assomption church in Colleville-sur-Mer has been classified as a historic monument since 1840.
Coast and Landscape
The Conservatoire du littoral owns 160 hectares at Omaha Beach and preserves a variety of habitats there: meadows, grasslands, heathlands, dunes, and forests. Omaha Beach in Colleville-sur-Mer offers many walking trails and nature-related recreational activities.
