Culture and Village Character
The Jardins du Pays d'Auge have been awarded the French “Jardin remarquable” label. The site is a three-hectare garden with a variety of themed planting areas, water gardens, rose gardens, perennials and collection plants, as well as a tool museum.
The Romanesque tower of the Église Saint Denis is its oldest part; it dates from the late 12th century. The church also has 20th-century stained-glass windows and a painting of the Presentation in the Temple inspired by Rubens. Cider Route
Cambremer is the starting point of the 40-kilometre Route du Cidre, which runs through the Pays d'Auge. The signposted route follows picturesque minor roads through the Pays d'Auge and leads to around 20 producers. It is accessible from National Routes 13 and 175.
The producers along the Route du Cidre welcome visitors for cellar tours and tastings and explain their know-how. The ciders of the Cru de Cambremer are described as slightly bitter and refreshing.
Products and Tours
The Caves du Manoir de Grandouet produce AOP Pays d'Auge cider, Pays d'Auge Calvados, Pommeau de Normandie, apple juice and Poiré. The Caves include a winery, a pot still and a wood-framed press from the 16th century. Guided tours in French and English with tasting are available.
Since 1865, the Huet family has produced and marketed Calvados, cider and Pommeau de Normandie at the Distillerie Pierre Huet in Cambremer. The distillery's estate covers 30 hectares of orchards. The guided tour explains the slow transformation of apples into Calvados, followed by a tasting.
Events
Hurlu Belles Rues is a street arts festival held every two years on the last weekend of July. The Cambremer AOC/AOP festival takes place every year on the first weekend of May. Cambremer's traditional market takes place on Sunday mornings at Easter, Whitsun and in July and August.
