Culture and History

The Church of Saint Martin is listed in the register of historic monuments, with entries for the 10th, 12th and 14th centuries, as well as for 1944. Its tower resembles a defensive tower and thus contrasts with the church towers with pointed spires characteristic of Norman architecture.

The space beneath the tower of the Church of Saint Martin retains its medieval character from the 15th century; it includes a ribbed vault, two Flamboyant-style windows and a stone credence table.

The British military cemetery of Cambes-en-Plaine is the resting place of 222 British soldiers who fought for the liberation of Caen and came mainly from the North Staffordshire and South Staffordshire regiments of the Staffordshire Division. The cemetery is located in the former château park, which was fiercely contested in the summer of 1944.

The Cross of Sacrifice stands among the trees and faces the cemetery’s only field of stelae.
