The Bayeux Tapestry is a wool embroidery on linen dating from the 11th century. It is almost 70 metres long and 50 centimetres high and tells the story of the conquest of England in 1066 by William the Conqueror, Duke of Normandy. It is listed in UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register. At the same time, it is considered a unique work from the 11th century and the only work of this scale to have survived to the present day.

Culture and History
Notre-Dame Cathedral is located in the old town of Bayeux and is a remarkably well-preserved example of Norman medieval architecture. It was consecrated in 1077 by Bishop Odo of Conteville in the presence of William the Conqueror. The cathedral is predominantly Gothic; its construction period extended from the 12th to the 15th century.
The MAHB is housed in a former bishop’s palace and presents European art from archaeology to modern art. Covering more than 2,100 square metres, it displays archaeological and ethnographic objects, paintings, sculptures, drawings, photographs, porcelain and lacework from Bayeux.
A 2.5-kilometre circular route through the old town of Bayeux leads through the city’s medieval history with 23 information panels.
