Balleroy: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The Château de Balleroy was built from 1626 to 1636 by the architect François Mansart for Monsieur de Choisy. In 2019, Balleroy was classified by the Calvados département as a “Village of Character”.

Culture

The Château de Balleroy and the village are considered examples of innovative urban planning that was intended to inspire other places in France, including Versailles. The dovecote in Balleroy has retained its original appearance and contains 1,700 preserved nesting holes. The circular Rond du Marché square in Balleroy has few comparable squares in France.

Malcolm Forbes founded a museum at the Château de Balleroy devoted entirely to aviation. Its objects and documents trace the history of ballooning from the first flights of the Montgolfier brothers.

Nature

The park of the Château de Balleroy covers 200 hectares and has two marked paths, lawns, tables and benches. The French gardens visible on arrival at the Château de Balleroy date from the early 20th century and were designed by Henri Duchêne.

Sightseeing

Guided tours of the Château de Balleroy last approximately 45 minutes and are offered in French or English. The grounds of the Château de Balleroy can be visited freely.

The Balloon Museum offers a self-guided tour of exhibitions about ballooning and its history. The Balloon Museum is accessible to wheelchair users via an adapted walkway.
