Vincly lies within the ZNIEFF area “La Haute Lys et ses végétations alluviales en amont de Thérouanne”, a type 1 ecological inventory area. In this area, the Lys follows a natural course with numerous meanders lined by riparian alder forests.

In the Matringhem–Vincly sector, outcrops of the primary rock Grès de Matringhem occur and are quarried.

Culture and history

The Notre-Dame-du-Bon-Voyage Chapel is a small Neo-Gothic chapel made of white stone. It was built in 1876 by Abbé Eugène Decroix, the parish priest of Matringhem, and stands halfway between Beaumetz-les-Aire and Reclinghem. The Écouflans pilgrimage takes place in this chapel, in the municipality of Vincly, from 7 to 15 September. The small Marian chapel in the hamlet of Écouflans has been a place of pilgrimage since time immemorial.

The Church of Saint Thomas of Canterbury has a distinctive façade set apart from the village centre. It consists of a choir and a lower nave topped by a wooden, slate-covered bell turret. Its northern wall is believed to date from the 12th century and is a rare surviving element of the first church building. The west gable was formerly made entirely of sandstone and flanked by two very low buttresses. Of the two bells, only one remains; the other was removed during the French Revolution.

The medieval history of Vincly is linked to seigneurial land management. Vincly Castle was first described in the Croÿ Albums. At the site of the former castle on the banks of the Lys, remains can be seen that bear witness to its past.

Hiking

The 12-kilometre Les Monts hiking trail passes through the Lys Valley and over the heights of the Artois hills. It connects the peaceful landscapes of the Lys Valley with panoramas from the high plateaus and leads as far as the village of Vincly.

The Les Monts hiking trail passes close to the Écouflans Chapel; Écouflans is designated here as a hamlet of Vincly. One section of the hike to the Notre-Dame-du-Bon-Voyage Chapel follows a ridge and offers views of Vincly and the Lys Valley.
