Coast and Countryside

On the coast lies the Grand Site des Deux-Caps, an exceptional, sensitive and protected natural area extending over 23 kilometres. The 170-kilometre GR 120 Sentier du Littoral connects the Belgian coast with the Baie d’Authie along the coastline.

Another distinctive landscape is the Marais Audomarois. It covers more than 3,600 hectares and includes 700 kilometres of waterways. A total of 2,600 species have been recorded there; more than 260 bird species live there or pass through. Some areas of the Marais Audomarois are accessible exclusively by boat. The area is described as France’s last cultivated and inhabited marsh. Maraîchage, meaning vegetable growing in the Marais Audomarois, dates back to the seventh century.

The GR Pays Tour de l’Audomarois forms a 120-kilometre loop starting in Saint-Omer. Between the coast, waterways and protected landscapes, Pas-de-Calais thus reveals itself in a variety of geographical forms.

Nature and Regional Specialities

Outside the Marais Audomarois too, nature observation goes hand in hand with regional attractions. Nausicaá offers an experience centred around Europe’s largest aquarium, which recreates Malpelo Island off Colombia. More than 58,000 animals live there; Nausicaá also supports the protection of marine ecosystems and marine animals.

Le jardin d’Élodie offers fresh or matured goat’s cheese, savoury and sweet tarts, as well as marsh vegetables, including organically grown open-field endives, local varieties and heritage vegetables.

Culture and History

The Louvre-Lens, with its Galerie du temps, presents more than 200 works in a 3,000-square-metre chronological gallery. The period covered ranges from the fourth millennium BC to the middle of the 21st century.

La Coupole houses a history and remembrance centre focusing on the occupation, the Second World War and the history of space exploration. Its 3D planetarium has a screen with a diameter of 15 metres and displays 360-degree images. It uses 10K 3D technology and offers sessions in several languages via audio headsets.

Regular exhibitions are held at the Maison du Port départemental d’Étaples. They are based on the département’s collection and the artistic heritage of the Côte d’Opale.

Activities

At Parc d’Olhain, the Tyrolienne descends 564 metres from the Belvédère platform and reaches speeds of up to 85 km/h. The Luge 4 saisons follows a one-kilometre circular course through the forest and offers views across the hills of Artois.

The Belvédère at Parc d’Olhain is a 40-metre-high structure with eight platforms. The highest platform reaches a height of 210 metres and offers panoramic views over the former mining basin, the Monts de Flandres, Artois and the surrounding countryside. The Village Enchanté at Parc d’Olhain is designed for children aged 4 to 8 and includes net courses, slides, towers and hammocks.

Getting There

The A26 motorway begins in Calais and passes near Arras. The region also has an extensive rail network, including TER and SNCF services.
