The ZNIEFF “Marais de Serques à Saint Martin-au Laert” covers Serques and has an area of 555.77 hectares. The Marais de Serques à Saint Martin-au Laert is criss-crossed by an extensive network of watergangs; some areas form genuine islands.
Serques is part of the Natura 2000 site “Prairies, marais tourbeux, forêts et bois de la cuvette audomaroise et de ses versants”. The Marais de Serques à Saint Martin-au Laert is also home to the only regional station of alpine pondweed (Potamogeton alpinus).
Culture and History
The Église Saint-Omer in Serques houses the sculptural group “Saint Anne, the Virgin and the Child Jesus”, which dates from the 16th century. The Église Saint-Omer de Serques has a Latin-cross floor plan and a single-nave layout. Its origins probably date back to the 12th century or even earlier; the presence of a clergyman is said to date back to 1187. Serques is also home to a pulpit associated with the Église Saint-Omer.
The Moulin de Serques was shut down in 1951. It stands on private property and is now a ruin.
Surroundings
The Tour de l'Abbaye de Watten, a monument, is located near Serques. The surrounding area also includes the historic Abbaye Saint-Bertin site, the ruins of the Abbaye de Clairmarais and the historic Abbaye de Ravensberg site.
In the wider region around Serques are Plage de Petit-Fort-Philippe beach, Île Jeanty island and Mont des Récollets hill.
Local Character
Au Jardin de Serques locally produces around forty different types of vegetables, including carotte de Tilques, and offers direct sales in the shop as well as in lockers accessible around the clock.
