History
The British attack on Oppy on 28 April 1917 failed. The attack on 3 May 1917, whose objectives included the capture of Oppy, also failed, with heavy losses. Oppy Wood was captured on 28 June 1917; 280 German soldiers were taken prisoner in the process.
An eyewitness account by a First World War veteran places troops on the Oppy Wood front shortly after the Battle of Vimy. After the First World War, Kingston upon Hull chose Oppy Wood as the site for its war memorial. The Kingston upon Hull War Memorial in Oppy Wood was unveiled in October 1927.
The Oppy Memorial commemorates the fallen from Kingston upon Hull and members of all local units who died in the First World War. The land for the Oppy Memorial was donated in memory of Pierre, a non-commissioned officer in the French 504th Tank Regiment who fell at Guyencourt on 8 August 1918.
Geographical setting
The Oppy-Méricourt-Vendin line ran west of Oppy and its wood and branched off to run on both sides of Arleux. The Oppy Memorial stands in the village square of Oppy.
There is no British military cemetery in Oppy; the nearest British cemeteries are in Willerval and Farbus.
Hiking
The GR 121 and local hiking trails in Oppy are to be preserved and better developed for exploration. Plans include car parks, rest and picnic areas, and information boards.
