Nature

The Twin Slag Heaps 11/19 in Loos-en-Gohelle reach a height of 186 metres and offer a 360-degree panorama of the region.

The 11/19 slag heaps are considered natural areas with particularly diverse flora and fauna; 159 animal species and 190 plant species have been recorded there.

The paths around the 11/19 slag heaps allow visitors to climb freely or with a guide to the summit of Slag Heap 74. Along the way, the woodland landscape gives way to black shale rubble, where distinctive thermophilic flora and fauna have developed.

Remembrance and Trails

The Loos Memorial, which surrounds Dud Corner Cemetery, bears the names of 20,000 soldiers.

In the memorial park at Côte 70, a winding, gradually ascending path with 1,877 engraved maple leaves – one for each Canadian soldier killed in the attack – leads to the Arthur Currie Amphitheatre; Frederick Lee Avenue continues to the obelisk at the summit of the Côte.

The Canadian National Vimy Memorial at Côte 70 was created in memory of the Canadian soldiers who lost their lives during the fighting in summer 1917 and was opened to the public in August 2017.

In the surrounding area, guides from the Musée Alexandre Villedieu offer tours of the Memorial, Slag Heap 11/19 and the British military cemetery at Dud Corner.

Among the Loossois footpaths through the former battlefields of the First World War described as future interpretation trails is the “Sépultures” path.
