Natural environment

The Base de Loisirs de l’ex-fosse n°2 dite « Dupont » in Hersin-Coupigny offers opportunities for walks in green surroundings. The Loisne runs through Hersin-Coupigny and rises at the foot of Mont de Coupigny. This is located in the Bois de Verdrel at a crossroads of hiking trails and has been recognised by the Regional Council and the European Union as part of the Trame verte – Trame bleue programme.

The Étangs de « La Claire Fontaine » site comprises woodland ponds and hiking trails. It has one pond for coarse fishing and four trout ponds.

Trails and activities

The Boucle Verte d'Hersin is a 9.4 km moderately difficult hiking route marked by FFRandonnée. It starts at Place de la Liberté in Hersin-Coupigny, opposite the church, and is marked in yellow. The tourist office provides GPX and KML files for this route.

The Circuit des anciens cavaliers des Houillères is 12 km long, takes 3 hours and follows former railway lines serving the collieries, which have been converted into soft, easy-to-walk paths covered with mulch. Les Craies Blanches also has an area for mountain biking, inline skating and skateboarding.

Culture and history

By appointment, the Comité Historique d'Hersin-Coupigny offers heritage discovery tours for companies, local authorities, associations and private individuals. The heritage walks include the Saint-Martin church and the centuries-old farmsteads in the Hersin-Coupigny area.

The Wallart-Delavalle chapel in Hersin-Coupigny was built in 1836 from brick on a layered sandstone base. Hersin-Coupigny developed considerably between 1854 and 1962 with the rise of the coal industry. The mining heritage of Hersin-Coupigny includes numerous former industrial sites that are being reclaimed through urban regeneration.

Hersin-Coupigny has two direct access roads to the RD 301, also known as the « Rocade Minière ».
