Culture
The Church of Saint-Vaast dates from the mid-18th century. Its furnishings include items dating from 1784 that have been classified by the Ministry of Culture as protected movable cultural heritage. On the north wall of the nave, near the Saint-Vaast altar, there is also a reliquary listed as protected movable cultural heritage.
The Carmelite convent continues to house nuns. The Confrérie des Charitables des Saints-Anges Gardiens was founded in 1753, accompanies the deceased and supports bereaved families.
History
The château-farm has been protected as a Monument historique by the French Ministry of Culture since 1983. It was built gradually from 1570 until the beginning of the 20th century. It includes a dovecote, a horse stable, stables, a barn, a bread oven and a residential section dating from the end of the Napoleonic era. Fouquières-lez-Béthune is also known locally as “the village of five castles”.
The communal cemetery surrounding the Church of Saint-Vaast contains the graves of former bourgeois families from the village, former members of the Resistance and a British war veteran. A military cemetery lies near the communal cemetery; most of those buried there are British and mainly date from the First World War. A total of 421 fallen soldiers from the two world wars are buried in this military cemetery.
Nature
An old lime tree, protected since 1929, stands in the communal cemetery of Fouquières-lès-Béthune.
