Courrières combines preserved evidence of its local history with public cultural and leisure facilities. The Saint-Piat parish church preserves the remaining walls and tower of a church dating from 1534 within a new building constructed between 1961 and 1964.

Those choosing Courrières as a holiday destination can rent a holiday apartment there.

Culture and History

The municipal Médiathèque François Mitterrand offers a free monthly programme for everyone, including workshops, performances, events, creative leisure workshops and exhibitions. Films are shown at the municipal cinema “Le Travelling”.

Courrières is also associated with the history of mining: the mining concession granted in 1852 extended across 12 municipalities and was named “concession de Courrières”.

Leisure

The Parc de Loisirs Léo Lagrange in Courrières has a fitness trail, sports equipment including a street workout area, two municipal outdoor tennis courts open to everyone, a children’s playground, multisport courts and a pétanque court.

The educational farm in Courrières welcomes families for free visits to observe the animals during opening hours. The municipal equestrian centre is open all year round and offers riding lessons for everyone aged five and over; a licence is required for this.

The municipal indoor swimming pool in Courrières has a paddling pool, a shallow pool with gradually increasing depth, a sports pool and a sauna. At “Central parc”, communal barbecue areas are available for picnics in a rural setting.

Nature and Trails

The Parc des berges de la Souchez extends across several neighbouring partner municipalities. Its green spaces, as well as its land and water areas, become attractive tourist destinations throughout the year.

In the Hénin-Carvin area, an interactive walking map shows footpaths that can be used all year round; it lists 285 km of routes for walks and hikes.

From the hut belonging to the “L’Odyssée des Cabanes” project, visitors can observe nature and (re)discover Courrières from a different perspective.

Local Life

The busy Wednesday morning market makes Rue Breton and Rue Basly the centre of the municipality of Courrières.
