Beuvrequen is part of the Basse vallée de la Slack, which stretches across five municipalities: Ambleteuse, Bazinghen, Beuvrequen, Marquise and Wimille. The landscape covers around 500 hectares, 25 kilometres of river, 11 kilometres of drainage ditches and 50 ponds. As a natural floodplain, it serves as a resting place for birds during migration.
Nature
The Sentier les Royons runs through the area. Its route connects Marquise, Beuvrequen, Wimille, Wimereux, Ambleteuse, Audresselles, Audinghen and Bazinghen. The trail is also a 31.1-kilometre mountain biking (VTT) circuit. It passes through the hinterland of Ambleteuse and the Slack marshes, where numerous bird and amphibian species can be found, including bitterns, white storks and corncrakes.
History and Culture
The earliest written form of Beuvrequen’s name is Bovorkem, which appears in the records of Saint Bertin in 1043. In medieval Beuvrequen, Saint Bertin Abbey owned an agricultural estate referred to as curtem de Boverchem. Meadows were cultivated there using irrigation systems. The water came from the Hondecote River, known as La Slack, and was supplied through a carefully maintained channel and drained through another canal. The historic irrigation system was managed in such a way that it did not interfere with the lower-lying operations of the Moulin de Lohem.
The Église Saint-Maxime in Beuvrequen has belonged to and been dependent on Saint Bertin Abbey near Saint-Omer since its beginnings. To visit the church, keys can be requested from Beuvrequen Town Hall.
