The Gallo-Roman Chaussée Brunehaut crosses Haut-Lieu and connects Reims with Bavay. Since 1890, the Saint-André Church has been the village church of Haut-Lieu. The Manoir de Biwetz in Haut-Lieu has been documented since the 13th century.
History
At the hamlet of Godin, a raised section of the Roman road from Bavay to Reims has been well preserved over a length of more than one kilometre. A Merovingian cemetery was discovered in 1854 during the operation of a quarry in Haut-Lieu.
Several small religious buildings are associated with specific years, locations and architectural details. The Oratoire Notre-Dame de Prospérité, dating from 1717, stands opposite the La Grande Maison farm at the junction of the de Hututu and des Ecassettes paths. The cylindrical Oratoire Notre-Dame de Bohain at 32 Route de Boulogne was built in 1737.
The Oratoire Saint-Pierre et Saint-Charles, dating from 1854, stands slightly set back from the Route de Cartignies at the place called “Le Godin”. Of the oratoires described here, it is the only one dedicated to Saint Charles. Another Notre-Dame de Lourdes chapel, dating from 1923, is built into the wall of a house on the Route d’Avesnes.
The Notre-Dame de Lourdes chapel, dating from 1890, has a two-leaf wrought-iron gate, whose closed panels are each decorated with a crucifix. The Oratoire Notre-Dame de Walcourt et Notre-Dame des Affligés, visible on the Chemin d’Hulaine, has an octagonal base and a skull in its inscription. An Oratoire Notre-Dame de Walcourt dating from 1755 stands near the Château de Biwetz.
Geology
Hard Viséan limestone is quarried at the Haut-Lieu quarry. A northern access path to a second pit in the Haut-Lieu quarry provides geological exposures. The geological site “Devonian / Carboniferous Boundary” in the Haut-Lieu quarry covers 119 hectares and is assigned to the national stratigraphy.
Local production
During an open day at Spiruline du Haut-Lieu, the production process is explained from the culture ponds through harvesting and drying to packaging. The programme for this open day includes tastings of spirulina flakes, tablets and fresh spirulina on toast with fruit juice.
Those who choose Haut-Lieu as a travel destination may wish to rent a holiday apartment.
