Culture and history

Gommegnies has two churches as well as fifteen chapels, oratories and calvaries. The religious buildings include the Eglise Notre-Dame de l’Assomption, a former fortified church from the 16th century. Its bell tower was rebuilt in 1866. The Eglise Saint-Joseph on the Place de Carnoy was built at the end of the 19th century and financed by the inhabitants of that time.

Other historic buildings include the Chapelle Notre-Dame-des-Affligés from the 18th century and the Chapelle Saint-Antoine de Padoue from the 17th century. Gommegnies’s historic economy was also connected with the Forêt de Mormal, particularly through the production of wooden shoes. Two workshops belonging to clog makers have been identified in Gommegnies.

Nature

The Forêt de Mormal lies south of Gommegnies along the Chaussée Brunehaut. The Forêt de Mormal has numerous hiking trails as well as paths suitable for cycling.

Bus line 990 connects Valenciennes, Gommegnies and Le Quesnoy.
