The Église dédiée à la Conversion de Saint-Paul in Clairfayts was classified as a historic monument by decree of 5 October 1920. The church was built in 1556 in the style of Flamboyant Gothic architecture; its floor plan follows a Latin cross and includes a transept.
The Chapelle d’Épinoy was listed as a historic monument by decree of 7 July 1948. It was built in 1472 on a rocky promontory and displays the characteristics of 15th-century Gothic art. Inside is a polychrome wooden sculpture of the Virgin Mary dating from 1200.
Épinoy, now a hamlet of Clairfayts, was an independent parish until 1825; Masses were formerly celebrated in its chapel. At the fork in the road at Oripette stands the Notre-Dame du Rosaire chapel, built around 1895 and long known as Chapelle Clara.
The Clairfayts war memorial to those who died in the First World War consists of a stone obelisk on a pedestal decorated with a palm and a Latin cross. The Mémorial des Passeurs commemorates Clairfayts residents who secretly helped resistance fighters, deserters and Allied airmen cross the border to reach Belgian networks during the occupation.
Landscape and Trails
The ZNIEFF type 1 natural area “Forêt domaniale du Val Joly, bois de Nostrimont et bois de Fetru” includes Clairfayts and is characterised by a landscape of woodland, bocage and ponds. Clairfayts originally developed as a clearing in a beech forest.
The Orbaye stream rises in Clairfayts and forms the border with Belgium at Les Près d’Orbaye. The Circuit du Biau Ri passes through Solre-le-Château, Beaurieux and Clairfayts; variants of 7 km and 11 km are available.
