Culture

The Église paroissiale Saint-Martin de Bergues includes several noteworthy architectural features: the southern gable of the southern transept was classified as a Monument historique by decree of 24 December 1907. The bell tower was built between 1510 and 1543 according to plans by Daniel Stoocke, and the church has stained-glass windows by Max Ingrand.

The almost completely preserved Remparts de Bergues retain architectural features from the time of the Counts of Flanders, the Burgundian and Spanish periods, as well as from Vauban's works. They can be visited using a plan available from Terre de Flandre Tourisme in Bergues or as part of a guided tour.

The Musée du Mont-de-Piété de Bergues houses paintings and drawings from the 16th to the 19th century, mainly from the schools of the North, as well as a natural history collection. The principal work of the Musée Municipal du Mont de Piété is “Le Vielleur au chien” by Georges de La Tour.

The Tramway Touristique offers a 40-minute guided tour through the history and heritage of Bergues aboard the “Tram nonante-neuf”. The ZNIEFF Remparts de Bergues comprises wetlands with open and wooded ditches, ponds, eutrophic meadows and numerous drainage ditches. These wetlands provide nesting habitat and are home to little egrets, grey herons and great crested newts.
