Bas-Lieu has six oratories and two chapels. The Saint-Liénard Oratory is the oldest building in Bas-Lieu and the municipality’s only cylindrical oratory. It stands at the entrance to the path named after it.
The Saint-Antoine-de-Padoue Oratory is shaped like a chapel with a pitched roof. The Notre-Dame-des-Affligés Oratory is set into the wall of a barn at 68 rue de Guersignies. The Sainte-Pétronille Oratory can be seen at La Verte Vallée, in the courtyard of an old farm, leaning against the wall of the house.
History
The Cense à Longe in Bas-Lieu served as the headquarters of Generals Jourdan and Carnot during the Battle of Wattignies in 1793.
The remains of Roman foundations and roof tiles at Haie d’Avesnes in Bas-Lieu were confirmed through field surveys and test excavations in the 1970s. Finds from Haie d’Avesnes indicate a Gallo-Roman rural settlement dating from the 2nd to the 4th century. The Roman tomb discovered in 1805 belongs to a necropolis associated with the settlement at Haie d’Avesnes.
In the past, the woodland known as Haie d’Avesnes covered most of the present-day municipal territory of Bas-Lieu.
