Culture and history

The feudal motte of Aymeries is a cultural heritage site in Aulnoye-Aymeries. Historical traces also include the former works of Pierre-Joseph Urbain, which were among the first steelworks in the Nord department to use coke. In 1839, Pierre-Joseph Urbain applied for authorisation to establish a metallurgical works in Aulnoye-Aymeries.

The Église Saint-Raphaël was built around 1960 to serve a housing estate for railway workers located in Aulnoye-Aymeries. Since 2010, the Théâtre de Chambre theatre company has occupied a former steam locomotive repair depot on the site of a former marshalling yard in Aulnoye-Aymeries. The Théâtre Léo Ferré was inaugurated by the artist on 20 November 1983.

The Pôle des Cultures Actuelles encompasses performance, artistic development, vocational and continuing education, and education. The 232U serves as an artistic residency venue and regularly opens its premises to other theatre companies. In addition to lending services and reading facilities, the Médiathèque Pierre Briatte offers concerts, conferences and workshops.

Nature and activities

A walk along the towpath beside the Sambre runs through Aulnoye-Aymeries between Berlaimont and Bachant. In Aulnoye-Aymeries, the Véloroute de la Sambre et de la forêt Mormal offers safe cycling paths for mountain biking. La Florentine is a 30-hectare area here that has been returned to nature.

Water and wellness

The Centre aquatique L’Aiguade has a 25-metre sports pool, an activity and leisure pool with a depth of between 0.90 and 1.30 metres, and a wellness area with a sauna, hammam, showers and relaxation room.

Events

The Rendez-vous des Saveurs et du Tourisme takes place every year in March at the Pôle des Cultures Actuelles and on the Place de La Marbrerie. It features 140 stalls, more than 70 percent of which are dedicated to the local area. The Foire aux disques takes place every year in April, with record dealers and a blues apéro.

Les Nuits Secrètes is a three-day summer festival in Aulnoye-Aymeries featuring the “Parcours secrets”.
