Culture and History
The Church of Saint-Gilles was built in 1525 by the Toulouse master masons Privat and Monestié. Its single-nave brick structure is complemented by a wall bell tower; the church also houses a 19th-century Cavaillé-Coll organ. The side chapels contain painted wooden altarpieces dating from 1660 and 1661.
Another defining building in the town is the Halle aux marchands. Antoine Cambon built it between 1822 and 1825 in the Neoclassical style. The hall has 22 round-arched arcades and, with the exception of the more recent metal closures, was listed as a historic monument by decree of 11 October 2004.
The present-day Chapelle de l’Ormette was completed in 1868, after the foundation stone had been blessed in 1863. It has a wall bell tower and an interior in the Saint-Sulpice style. The historic townscape also includes the Marroule windmill, a brick-built mill dating from the 1850s.
Nature and Trails
West of the village lies the Rieumes Forest, a 379-hectare woodland in the sector historically known as “Gratecuq”. Its paths are suitable for hiking, horse riding and mountain biking. In the area around Rieumes, the GR 86 passes through forests and local streams.
The Lac de la Bure is located in the immediate vicinity of Rieumes, between Rieumes and Poucharramet. The Sentier de randonnée des Hospitaliers hiking trail runs along the lake.
The Tour de Rieumes makes it possible to discover the village and its history in a green, natural setting. The starting point is the village water tower, completed in 1896 and bearing a stone bas-relief with the coat of arms of Rieumes.
