Montesquieu-Volvestre: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Montesquieu-Volvestre is a bastide founded in 1238 by Raymond VII, Count of Toulouse. The town’s historic landmarks include the market hall, which was built at the same time as the bastide was founded in the 13th century, and the Église Saint-Victor. It was built in the 13th century as a fortified church with four defensive towers and, including its crypt, has been classified as a historic monument since 21 September 1983. The church houses Girodet de Coussy’s painting “Déposition de Croix”. The Moulin de Barrau watermill is also part of the town’s history: it has been in operation since 1450.

Markets and Events

The large market in Montesquieu-Volvestre takes place on Tuesday mornings, while the small farmers’ market is held on Saturday mornings. A seasonal event is the Halle Gourmande: every year on the second Sunday in December, a Christmas market with regional products, handicrafts and gastronomic offerings takes place beneath the bastide’s market hall.

Montesquieu-Volvestre hosts the Festival du Film Britannique every year. English and Irish films are shown in their original versions with subtitles. The L’île au théâtre festival takes place over three days on the first weekend in June. It features four performances on the Île du Ramier, including one for younger visitors. The Journées Agricoles du Volvestre will also take place in Montesquieu-Volvestre on 18, 19 and 20 September 2026.

Nature and Trails

The Parc du Ramier offers opportunities to relax and have a picnic. The Parc du Couloumé has children’s play facilities and a fitness trail. A botanical speciality is the nationally protected Tulipe de l’Ecluse, which has one of the largest populations in the region in Montesquieu-Volvestre.

Le chemin du Castera et de Monléon begins in the historic centre of Montesquieu-Volvestre. The circular trail Le chemin du Castéra et de Monléon offers views of the Arize plain, the hills of Volvestre and the Pyrenees. It is 5.4 kilometres long and takes around two hours. The circular trail Le Tour d’Argain is 6.7 kilometres long and takes around two hours and 15 minutes; the circular trail Testory et Bonsoumet is five kilometres long and takes around two hours.
