In the regional surroundings of Frontignan-Savès, the Collines gasconnes du Savès form a transitional area between the Pyrenees and Gascony. They encompass narrower river valleys, hilly landscapes, meadows, remaining woodland and large expanses of cultivated fields.
Culture and history
The church in Frontignan-Savès has been protected as a historic monument since 26 March 1973. It has a bell gable pierced by three arches and supported by buttresses.
The present-day Château Saint-Orens followed an earlier fortification and dates from the early 16th century; one bell bears the year 1502. Remains of a medieval predecessor, as well as a drawbridge and a portcullis, were discovered underground, while the former moats have since been filled in. The square tower has defensive openings. Château Saint-Orens also contains a staircase dated 1657, with steps carved from a single piece of oak.
In 1246, Frontignan-Savès was under the rule of Savès; the first mention of the village dates from 1350.
Hiking and the municipality
The 11.4-kilometre moderate circular hiking trail “Sentier de Mauvezin” passes through Frontignan-Savès. On 28 April 2026, hiking trails in the municipality of Frontignan-Savès were entered in the plan départemental des itinéraires de promenade et de randonnée (PDIPR).
