Fougaron: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes
Geographical location
Fougaron is situated in the upper Arbas Valley in the Haute-Garonne département. The village can only be reached by road from the village of Arbas. Anyone considering Fougaron as a place to stay may wish to rent a holiday apartment.
Nature
The municipality of Fougaron forms part of the Massif de l'Arbas, a type 2 continental ZNIEFF area. Fougaron lies on a mountain front and extends across elevations ranging from 473 to 1,416 metres.
The cultural landscape consists of a forest clearing used mainly as pasture by horse and cattle farmers. Most of Fougaron's forest consists of beech, ash, oak and chestnut trees, among others. Several streams cross Fougaron, including the Ruisseau de la Bouche, the Ruisseau du Plan, Le Caillaou and the Ruisseau de la Cabanasse. Their flow remains very stable even during dry periods.
From the Montaragnoué viewpoint, there are views of Herran, Fougaron, Arbas and Chein-Dessus.
Culture
The Church of Saint-Bertrand dates from the 18th century and has a marble portal built in 1719. Inside are religious paintings by Roger de Suère de Larroque Cazaux.
The Pont d’Eths Carbouès bridge was built in 1860. It stands at the confluence of two streams and has two arches. The old water mill in the Eths Carbouès hamlet still has its main building, water channel and water wheel. Another bridge on the Chemin de le Marette dates from around the 18th century and has a single original arch.
Charcoal production was a speciality in Fougaron until the beginning of the 20th century. Charcoal produced in Fougaron was exported as far as Toulouse.
Hiking
The official Fougaron–Herran hiking route starts and ends in Fougaron. The route is an easy 5.8-kilometre hike that takes around two hours. It runs between the forest and the foothills of the Pyrenees, alternating between open and shaded sections.
Local life
Fougaron's annual local festival, the Fête locale, takes place on the last weekend of July. There is an auberge in Fougaron.
