Aurignac bears a piece of prehistory in its name: the Aurignac rock shelter is the eponymous archaeological site of a prehistoric era. There, Édouard Lartet discovered and identified typical tools from this era in 1860. The Musée de l’Aurignacien offers a permanent exhibition about this significant discovery, the impressive Ice Age animal world and the survival strategies of prehistoric populations. Guided tours are available for individual visitors, groups, school classes and toddlers aged 1 to 3.
Renting a holiday apartment in Aurignac is an option for planning your personal trip.
Culture and history
The Église Saint Pierre aux Liens is integrated into the defence system of Aurignac’s first fortification, dating from the 13th century. Its deep entrance portico is supported by four twisted columns that stand on a solid balustrade decorated with Flamboyant Gothic designs. The church tower still houses a manually wound weight-driven clock made in 1924, which is in working order.

From the summit of the Donjon of the Château Comtal, there is a panorama of the Pyrenees mountain range; there is also an orientation board there. The interpretation trail “In the footsteps of our ancestors” leads through the forest along the Rhodes stream to the prehistoric rock shelter.
