Culture and History

The Château fort de Watronville is a fortified complex built in the 15th century, of which a large square tower and buildings along the curtain wall remain. The complex was damaged during the First World War, restored and remodelled in 1923. It is privately owned and currently used as a residence.

The Seigneurie of Watronville belonged to the four peerage baronies of the Bishopric of Verdun. The Église de l’Assomption in Watronville dates from the 18th century and was rebuilt in 1928–1929 after the First World War. Following the destruction caused by the war, only the portal and the first storey of the bell tower remained.

Nature and Trails

The Ronde des Vergers was launched in 1994 by Watronville’s leisure association and is organised as an annual hiking event. It follows sections of the Regional Natural Park of Lorraine, the battlefields and routes certified by the Fédération Française de Cyclisme, allowing visitors to discover flowering orchards. A farmers’ market complements the event.

After passing through Watronville, Circuit 91 – Le Tacot follows the Chemin de la Tonne into the forest. The remains of the Roman camp Camp-des Romains-du-Châtelet can be reached via the La Tonne path.

The Chemin du tacot is signposted a few metres above the Église de Watronville. It leads past orchards and through the forest and offers panoramic views of the Woëvre plain. After descending via the Côte Saint-Simon, it returns to Watronville on a paved road. In the Watronville area, the trail offers a hike of approximately two hours.
