Culture and History

Nature and Water

The Natura 2000 corridor de la Meuse includes forts, concrete shelters, tunnels and saps that can serve as habitats for bats during hibernation and reproduction. The state forests of Verdun and Mort-Homme were largely created by reforesting former First World War battlefields. The forests are home to the yellow-bellied toad and the great crested newt, both amphibians of Community interest.

Lac de Madine is a 1,100-hectare wetland, a Natura 2000 site and a national hunting and wildlife protection area. It has a nature interpretation trail and an observatory for discovering nature. The complete circuit around Lac de Madine and its shores is more than 18 kilometres long and can be completed on foot or by bicycle.

During the warmer season, swimming, fishing and water sports are possible at the Madine leisure facility. The Madine visitor centre also offers golf and mountain-bike rental. Butte de Montsec rises to 377 metres and offers panoramic views over the surrounding area and Lac de Madine.

Cycling and Trails

The circuit around Lac de Madine is officially listed as circuit number 15 among the 22 mountain-bike routes listed in Meuse. La Meuse à Vélo is designated as a European cycling route. Two bicycle rental locations are listed for the Lac de Madine circuit: Madine Cycles and Divotourbiking.

For Meuse, 302 kilometres of maintained hiking trails are indicated; 298 trails are listed online. Meuse is also associated with 33 kilometres of greenways. In the interregional Land Of Memory programme, which connects Belgium, Luxembourg and Meuse, the joint framework includes an educational website and a travelling exhibition entitled “Our Common Heritage”.
