Culture
The Musée d’Argonne presents the folk arts and traditions of the Argonne. A model and several objects bear witness there to the arrest of King Louis XVI and his family on June 21, 1791. The Musée d’Argonne is currently closed until further notice.
An important building in the town is the Église Notre-Dame. The first building dates back to the 12th century. After the fire in September 1914, the church was rebuilt using the original materials, including limestone from Gaize and yellow stone from Buzancy. By decree of June 8, 1914, the Église Notre-Dame was classified as a historic monument.
The story of the arrest of Louis XVI and his family is also addressed along the Itinéraire Louis XVI. It comprises seven panels at locations connected with the events. The final panel explains what became of the main participants in the drama. The motto “Le Droit est plus important que la Paix” is displayed at the Monument de Pennsylvanie.
Nature
The Arboretum de Varennes-en-Argonne covers an area of 3 ha and contains 38 different tree species, including around ten native species. A marked 2.5 km-long path runs through the arboretum; each tree species is presented on an illustrated panel.
