Culture

The Collégiale Saint-Étienne acquired its present form in 1824. The Musée d’Art sacré presents the development of sacred art from the Middle Ages to the second half of the 20th century in thematic and chronological form. It includes sections devoted to goldsmithing, sculpture and temporary exhibitions.

The Benedictine Library houses 74 manuscripts dating from the 9th to the 16th century, as well as 86 incunabula, meaning books printed in the 15th century. During the summer season, it hosts themed exhibitions featuring remarkable works from the first room.

The Maison Ligier-Richier preserves a terracotta ceiling from the beginning of the 16th century, which is considered the only example of its kind recorded in Europe to date.

Nature

The municipality of Saint-Mihiel includes an approximately 183-hectare ZNIEFF around the Fontaine des Carmes, where rare plant species and varieties have been recorded. The seven rocks of the Dames de Meuse lie at the exit of Saint-Mihiel in the direction of Verdun and are now used for walks, pilgrimages and climbing.

The Circuit Découverte de Saint-Mihiel is an easy 2.9-kilometre circular walk with a stated duration of 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Local Life

The Marché couvert in Saint-Mihiel was built in 1902. Its metal structure is reminiscent of the Pavillon Baltard in Paris. Every Saturday morning, the covered market welcomes traders and market gardeners from the surrounding area for the weekly market.
