The German military cemetery of Romagne-sous-Montfaucon is located on Rue de l'Europe. It was established by the German army in September 1914 and is the final resting place of 1,407 German and eight French casualties of the First World War. The Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery and its chapel were listed as historic monuments by a decree dated 28 December 2017. Through its presentation, the visitor centre offers an immersive experience. The outdoor areas are freely accessible all year round, except on 25 December and 1 January. The visitor centre is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; last admission is at 4:45 p.m.
History
The Church of Saint-Michel de Romagne-sous-Montfaucon was completely destroyed during the American Meuse-Argonne Offensive in October 1918 and rebuilt between 1925 and 1927 in the neo-Romanesque style. Its stained-glass windows, paintings and ceramic Stations of the Cross represent a unique modern style. L. Barillet, J. Le Chevallier and T. Hanssen are named as stained-glass artists and mosaic artists.
