Étain: Holiday apartments and houses

The Church of Saint Martin in Étain preserves structural elements from the 12th century, five bays of the nave from the 13th century, as well as additions from the 14th century. Its choir was rebuilt from 1437 at the expense of Guillaume Huin, a future cardinal who came from Étain.

Culture

The Chapelle du Sacré Cœur in the Church of Saint Martin houses La Piéta, which has been classified as a historic monument since 1905. The depiction shows the Virgin Mary at life size holding the lifeless body of Jesus Christ on her knees.

The town hall also bears traces of its construction history: Reconstruction was entrusted to Joseph Hornecker and carried out from 1922 to 1926 while preserving the original layout of the main façade. During the town hall's opening hours, only the entrance hall is accessible; the ceremonial salon cannot be visited.

The Musée des Jouets Petitcollin presents the history of manufacturing in a sound-and-light production led by the mascots Viny and Cellulo. The museum also offers families an activity in which they can design their own virtual doll on a tablet.

Nature and trails

The 17.3 km circular trail “Du bois de Tilly au fil de l'Orne” starts at the Halle d'Étain, 2 rue des Casernes. In the Bois de Tilly, there is an 8.3 km mountain biking trail, a 7.9 km hiking trail, a 3.5 km course and a 1.4 km botanical trail.

The Bois de Tilly is home to local tree, shrub, amphibian and mammal species. These include sessile oak, pedunculate oak, birch, wild cherry, wild pear, whitebeam, aspen, hornbeam, European spindle, cornelian cherry, hawthorn, frogs, toads, salamanders, alpine newts, smooth newts, roe deer and squirrels.

The renaturalized Orne in Étain is classified as an Espace Naturel Sensible (ENS) because of its landscape value and biological diversity.
