The Gorges de Galamus are located in the vicinity of Saint-Paul-de-Fenouillet. The gorge can be explored on foot; it is also possible to visit it by land or on the water. The Gorges de Galamus are a classified and protected natural area. They lie entirely within the Natura 2000 area “Basses Corbières”, partly because of the bird species of European importance found there.

Culture and history

The Chapitre in Saint-Paul-de-Fenouillet is classified as a historic monument. In the 10th century, it developed from a Benedictine abbey and became a collegiate church in the 14th century. In the 15th century, Franciscans built a cave chapel, from which the Ermitage Saint-Antoine de Galamus emerged. The hermitage is a pilgrimage site associated in particular with Easter Monday for the Occitans and Whit Monday for southern Occitania and Catalonia.

The Musée du Chapitre is housed in the former buildings of the collegiate church and displays folk traditions, archaeology and mineral collections. These also include a staged depiction of everyday life in the 19th century and a collection of old craft tools.

South of Saint-Paul-de-Fenouillet, the Clue de la Fou cuts through the Lesquerde range. A Roman bridge spans the river there; cavities created by erosion are locally known as “marmites de géants”.

Activities

Canyoning in the Gorges de Galamus involves crossing a horizontal gorge without rope techniques, with slides and optional jumps. The activity takes place under professional supervision. The Véloroute V81 runs along the canyon between Saint-Paul-de-Fenouillet and Cubières and makes it possible to visit the Gorges de Galamus.

Based in Saint-Paul-de-Fenouillet, Oxygen Aventure offers excursions supervised by state-certified guides for canyoning, caving and via ferrata, as well as white-water sports, including in the Gorges de Galamus.

Air Galamus offers ULM autogyro flights over the Gorges de Galamus, Lac de l'Agly and the Cathar castles exclusively by prior reservation.

Getting around

From Saint-Paul-de-Fenouillet, follow the signs to the Gorges de Galamus and drive 5 kilometres to the car park. The seasonal liO bus route 506 connects Saint-Paul-de-Fenouillet, the Gorges de Galamus and Cubières-sur-Cinoble; it operates exclusively in July and August and costs €2 per journey.

The Ermitage Saint-Antoine de Galamus can be reached via a path from the viewpoint car park or via stairs. It is open from 15 March to 15 November.
