Pyrénées-Orientales: Holiday apartments and holiday homes
Geographical location
When looking for a holiday apartment to rent in Pyrénées-Orientales, the landscape of this département is the first focus. Pyrénées-Orientales lies where the Pyrenees meet the Mediterranean in the south of France. The Parc naturel régional des Pyrénées catalanes borders Spain and Andorra and includes Capcir, Cerdagne and Conflent. Pyrénées-Orientales includes mountain peaks ranging from a few hundred metres to 2,921 metres at Pic du Carlit.
Cerdagne and Capcir are high plateaus between 1,300 and 1,500 metres; the Sègre rises in Cerdagne, while the Aude has its source in Capcir. Capcir is described as a high-altitude plain with mountain villages, large lakes and pine forests.
Nature
The regional park contains eight alpine and Nordic ski resorts, including Les Angles and Font-Romeu. Mountain activities in Pyrénées-Orientales include hiking, mountain biking, climbing and skiing. The winter resorts offer downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, tobogganing and dog sled rides.
Five facilities in the regional park provide access to naturally warm water or thermal water, including Molitg-Les-Bains, Vernet-Les-Bains, Saint-Thomas, Dorres and Llo.
Wine
The IGP Côtes Catalanes extends across the entire wine-growing area of Pyrénées-Orientales and includes 118 municipalities. The Vallée de l’Agly wine route combines historic wine and agricultural heritage with gastronomy. The Vallée de la Têt wine route takes visitors to local producers and appellations. The Vallée du Tech wine route combines wine tasting with villages, landscapes and the knowledge of local producers.
Culture and history
The World Heritage Site Fortifications of Vauban includes Mont-Louis and Villefranche-de-Conflent as two of its twelve component sites. The citadel of the Château des rois de Majorque was built by Vauban.
Evidence of historic iron metallurgy and Catalan forges has been preserved on and around the Canigou massif. Traditional pastoral heritage includes wells, chapels, washhouses and shepherds’ shelters associated with earlier knowledge and skills. The département’s architectural heritage includes churches, chapels and religious buildings in styles ranging from the Via Domitia to contemporary creations.
Getting around
The Train Jaune connects Villefranche-de-Conflent and Latour-de-Carol through the landscapes of Conflent and Cerdagne. It offers a journey in open carriages and views of the Pyrenean mountain ranges.
