Saint-Nazaire: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

The Étang de Canet-Saint-Nazaire is part of the European Natura 2000 network. Between February and May and from August to October, visitors can observe, among others, 246 different bird species, including 200 migratory species.

Nature

During the season, the intervention team of the Conservatoire du Littoral offers guided tours of the Étang de Canet-Saint-Nazaire lagoon. The Fête de l’étang, held every year in June, includes guided tours, conferences, exhibitions and workshops.

Trails

The Sentier du terroir starts at an information sign opposite the town hall, at the entrance to the car park. It is an 8.7 km hiking trail in Saint-Nazaire that runs along the Réart River between orchards and vineyards.

The Sentier Transhumance is a 5.8 km circular hiking trail starting in Saint-Nazaire. It is described as an easy family walk and leads to the shore of the lagoon, where pink flamingos rest.

Local produce

Saint-Nazaire’s local produce includes hand-picked apricots from Roussillon with AOC protection.

Getting around

Sankéo line 22 serves Saint-Nazaire from Monday to Saturday with several daily services, as well as on Sundays and public holidays by reservation.

Culture

The Chapelle de l’Arca was restored by the municipality and turned into a place for relaxation. Its park is used for festive evenings, celebrations and other festive gatherings. The Chapelle de l’Arca was built around 1890 by the local population to replace the church of a former village that had long since been abandoned.

La Fossella is a man-made diversion channel that supplied Saint-Nazaire with water and irrigated the farmland below the village. La Passa was the crossing used by the lagoon’s fishermen to reach the land and the village’s original site. Saint-Nazaire has been documented since the 9th century under the name “Sancti Nazarii” and became “Sanctus Nazarius de la Solsa” in the 12th century.

The parish church of Saint-Nazaire is built of river pebbles and decorated with red brickwork typical of the late 19th century. It replaced the former Romanesque village church from the 12th century. A fountain was built at the Tour à signaux on the foundations of the former signal tower; the remains of its walls are visible behind it.
