Nature and Trails

Prugnanes is part of the Basses Corbières Natura 2000 protected area, a special protection area for birds with the designation FR 911011.

The Sentier des Grottes runs through the large synclinal area of Fenouillèdes, across limestone terrain near sinkholes and caves. The difficult 14 km hiking trail is a circular route that starts and ends in Prugnanes.

Roc de Capeils is a summit in the vicinity of Prugnanes. A hiking route from Prugnanes leads to Roc Paradet, which is also a summit in the vicinity; from there, a 360° panorama extends as far as Ariège. Roc del Nissol is another nearby summit. The Le Rêve de Sylvain hiking trail leads through Mediterranean woodland and is associated with a local legend: according to it, on the first summer moonlit night, the fairies of Fou dance all night on the Pla de Moulis at the foot of this summit.

Culture and History

The Église Saint-Martin, together with its forecourt, forms the centre of Prugnanes. The small single-nave building is partly built on rock. It may correspond to the church already mentioned in 1011; over the course of time, it appears to have been extensively remodelled or completely rebuilt.

In the centre of Prugnanes, the village fountain stands beneath an old plane tree; it bears a plaque with the year 1864.

Château de Peyrepetuse is a castle in the wider regional surroundings of Prugnanes. Château de Quéribus, Château de Termes and Château de Durfort are also castles in the wider regional surroundings of Prugnanes. Pech de Bugarach is a summit near Prugnanes.
