Escaro: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Escaro is located in the Natura 2000 site “Pins de Salzmann du Conflent”, which includes Fuilla, Sahorre, Serdinya and Souanyas in addition to Escaro. The short-toed snake eagle, an eagle that feeds exclusively on reptiles, breeds in this area.

History

Until the early 1960s, Escaro was one of the major centres of iron ore mining in the Canigó Massif. The Musée de la Mine in Escaro conveys this history through a unique collection of tools and everyday objects.

Hiking

The route to the Gare minière de la Vista is an easy 8.3 km hike with a stated duration of three hours without breaks. The hike starts at the car park at the junction of the D27 and D27d at an altitude of 880 m.

The circular route to the Gare minière de la Vista follows the former railway line and showcases the remnants of the mining history of Escaro–Aytua. At Le Bac, the Circuit de Bailloubère follows a former railway line that was used to transport iron ore from the Aytua mines to the inclined hauling system above Serdinya.

A hike to the former mining concessions reveals the traces left in the landscape by a fluorite quarry and passes rails, inclined hauling systems and abandoned mine carts.

Culture

The Sainte-Christine Chapel in Aytua was completely restored from 2014 to 2016. In its sacristy, a newly installed display case presents several objects, two statues and a 17th-century chalice. Construction of the small chapel was commissioned in 1592; the chapel is fully preserved.
