Caramany: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes
Lac de l’Agly is a 7-kilometre-long, 150-hectare artificial reservoir surrounded by holm oaks and vineyards. Within the municipality of Caramany, there are two launching points on its right bank: the lieux-dits “L’Horto” and “Plan des vignes”. Fishing from a boat on Lac de l’Agly is permitted year-round.
Those choosing Caramany as a holiday destination may wish to rent a holiday apartment there.
Nature
At L’Horto, information boards provide details about hiking trails for all levels – from a one-hour family loop along the water to hikes lasting several days through the Fenouillèdes.
The Fontaine de Mate l’oliu can be reached via a DFCI track. This runs through the Balderbe forest to the road to Trilla; around a small spring, there is a small picnic area.
Fishing is permitted year-round on the float-tube course at the Barrage sur l’Agly, provided that the permitted fishing methods are observed.
Culture and History
The Church of Saint-Etienne contains a baptismal font that may date from the 15th century, as well as 17th-century chandeliers and religious statues. Guided tours of the church take place every summer and during the Heritage Days.
The Porte du Rebelli is the best-preserved remnant of Caramany’s fortifications; it can be viewed at the end of Rue de la Placette. The bell tower of Caramany has been a landmark and source of pride for the village since 1848.
The windmill is also part of the area’s traditional history: in the Napoleonic cadastre published in 1834, it appears as “vieux moulin à vent”, and on the summary page as “moulin ruiné”.
Wine
Caramany is one of five precisely delimited designations that may be added to the Côtes du Roussillon Villages appellation. The winegrowers of Caramany were pioneers in carbonic maceration winemaking.
Caramany is home to vineyards with old vines of the Carignan, Grenache and Syrah varieties, growing on slopes with gneiss and granite gravel soils. The Vignerons de Caramany offer guided tours for groups on request, as well as free tastings for groups.
