Caixas: holiday apartments and holiday homes

Caixas showcases its long history through religious buildings, dolmens and rock carvings. Romanesque churches, fortified structures and visible evidence from earlier eras create a diverse local landscape.

For travellers wishing to rent a holiday apartment in Caixas, choosing accommodation is itself part of planning the trip.

Culture

The Romanesque Chapelle Saint-Marc has a rectangular apse and is classified as a historic monument. Its single-nave body has a barrel vault; a stone engraved with an Alpha and Omega is located on the triumphal arch. The church dates from before the year 1000. A steep path leads from the road to the building, which stands on the wooded hills of Caixas.

The Church of Saint-Jacques is Caixas’s parish church and was fortified in the 14th and 15th centuries. Its furnishings include an 18th-century altarpiece, restored in 1878, a 17th-century Christ figure, and a reliquary bust containing relics from the 17th and 18th centuries.

In the hamlet of Candell stands the 13th-century Chapel of Saint-Pons, first mentioned in texts in 1268. Still preserved there are a nave with a wooden structure, a broad apse built later, a semicircular-arched stone portal and a bell gable.

The church of Fontcouverte is Romanesque, dedicated to Notre-Dame and already mentioned in 942. It houses a 17th-century statue of the Virgin Mary. The Church of Sainte-Colombe de Las Illas received a second nave in the 14th or 15th century; at the same time, the choir was rebuilt.

The Chapelle Saint-Julien-du-Vilar is an Early Romanesque ruin with an east-facing semicircular apse and remains of wall paintings. Its style appears to indicate that it was built in the 11th century.

History

Two medieval texts from 942 and 1025 mention the place name “Petra Scripta” in Fontcouverte. Four dolmens are also still visible in Caixas: Serrat d'en Jac, Col de la Llauze, Serrat de Cami Réal and La Ramera.

Rock carvings can be found on numerous rocks and on slate; they have been dated to approximately 2,000 years ago.

Local life

The municipal events programme for 2026 listed Goigs del ous, the Midsummer celebration, the Saint-Jacques village festival and a mass in Fontcouverte. Pétanque matches were also scheduled for Fridays in August and September at 6 p.m.

The organic Fromagerie de Caixas sells small farmhouse cheeses made from goat’s milk, including Cabécou des Aspres in plain and seasoned varieties, Caixas, Cayroux, yoghurt and Tommes.
