Culture and History
The Mémorial du camp d’Argelès-sur-Mer is a municipal museum and place of remembrance, integrated into the city’s Culture and Heritage Department. The Mémorial also has a space for temporary exhibitions held throughout the year.
The Casa de l'Albera is a municipal cultural centre in the heart of Argelès-sur-Mer, featuring a permanent exhibition and temporary exhibitions. The four exhibitions, including a temporary exhibition, cover the geology of the Albères, Catalan history and customs, as well as agricultural occupations. As a fully renovated traditional house, the Casa de l'Albera also conveys the history, culture, heritage and traditional know-how of Argelès and the Albères Massif.
The Église Notre-Dame-dels-Prats was built in the 10th century and houses 103 works of art. Its bell tower dates from the 14th century and is 34 metres high.
Nature and Landscape
Argelès-sur-Mer is associated with the Natura 2000 site “Embouchure du Tech et grau de la Massane” (FR9101493). The site consists of a continental and a marine section; the marine section is located within the Parc naturel marin du golfe du Lion. The dune at Plage de la Marenda north of Argelès-sur-Mer is home to protected and rare species of the Mediterranean coast.
The discovery trail in the Mas Larrieu nature reserve is freely accessible to the public all year round, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Things to Do
Parc de Valmy is free to the public and offers shaded woodland areas, a family picnic area and a children’s playground. It includes a botanical and cultural educational trail with around 15 themed information panels on the history, culture, heritage, fauna and flora of Argelès-sur-Mer and the Albères. Parc de Valmy is also the starting point for several hikes, as well as mountain biking and Nordic walking routes.
At Plage du Racou, visitors can explore coves with a mask and snorkel, go underwater fishing and enjoy paddleboarding.
